My Dance Journey
I started dancing in Seattle, WA when I moved to the big city for my first job after college. I lived in some crummy Appartments in the rough side of town which happened to be walking distance to a Country Bar called Bourbon Jacks. They taught line dancing lessons 3 days a week and I was enamored by it and never missed a lesson. 2 months in a saw these two girls I knew partner dancing and asked them to teach me. They said no ☹️. At the time YouTube didn't didn't have a whole lot of content and Instagram and Facebook had very little content on country dancing. So went on the I casually searched across town to looked across town for dance lessons a saw that the local community center was teaching a series of “east coast swing” and “west coast swing”. after taking both and developing a report with the dance instructors I explained what I saw the two girls doing at the country bar and what I was trying to learn. They said what you want to learn is COUNTRY TWO STEP.
They pointed me to learn at the Rockin Horse Dance barn in Renton WA, I would then go take every all there series of Two step lessons “beginner” , “intermediate , “advanced” and devoted myself into figuring out this dance. I loved the Rockin Horse but being 26 at the time the clientele was significantly older with not a person from the community less then 50 years old so I would go back to the country bars.
During this time Bourbon Jacks closed which was sad and disappointing as I wouldn’t have my first country dance hall anymore or one I could literally walk across the street too. But this would force me to branch out and explore other country dance halls in the puget sound venturing out to Big Whiskey in Puyallup and Steel Creek in Tacoma.
No Bourbon Jack’s would be a blessing in disguise as I would meet so many new friends and expand my scope of partner dancing.
Taking the skills of Two Step from the Rockin’ Horse that I had learned and bringing them to the Dance Halls gave me confidence of what I was doing in asking everyone I could to dance as many times as I could
